On Friday, March 31st, Northwich Town Bridge will be illuminated in pink and yellow to mark the end of Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Northwich Town Council has joined forces with Blackpool Council in lighting up iconic landmarks to show support for those affected by brain tumours.
The request to light up the Town Bridge came from local resident Cali Hannan Woods, whose cousin Zara is currently living with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma. Zara’s inspiring story can be found at Zara’s Story. Radio Northwich, a community radio station, will also be supporting the event. Presenter John Thompson’s stepson, Jacob, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2021, making this cause particularly close to his heart.
Justine Whitehead expressed her gratitude for the council’s support, sharing her own family’s struggle with Jacob’s cancer. She emphasized the urgent need for investment in brain tumour research, as brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer. The Brain Tumour Research charity works tirelessly to improve life expectancy but requires continuous funding to maintain its four research centers.
In addition to the lighting event, Steve Sharman, a Support Group Facilitator, shared information about two local brain tumour support groups that provide valuable resources and comfort for those affected. The Northwich Group, established in 2013, meets on the first Monday of each month at the Northwich Carers Centre. The Liverpool Brain Tumour Support Group meets every third month at The Brain Charity in Liverpool.
These support groups encourage open conversations about brain tumours, their effects on patients and their families, and offer advice on managing the challenges that come with the diagnosis. Donations from Weaver Lodge 6180 and other sources help provide disability equipment for members in need.
The pink and yellow lights on Northwich Town Bridge will shine from dusk until dawn on Friday, March 31st. The Northwich Town Council encourages all residents to show their support for those affected by brain tumours by learning about Zara’s story and contributing where possible. Through events like these, communities can come together to raise awareness and support the vital work of organizations like Brain Tumour Research.
