Northwich Town Council is proud to announce that Witton Cemetery has been awarded Gold in the Parish, Town and Community Burial Grounds Category at the 2025 Cemetery of the Year Awards, a prestigious recognition celebrating excellence in cemetery management, community engagement, and environmental care.
Organised by the Memorial Awareness Board (MAB) in partnership with the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM), the annual awards showcase outstanding achievement in cemetery operation and service standards across the UK. This year’s competition was highly competitive, with entries from cemeteries demonstrating innovation, compassion, and commitment to public service. The National Cemetery of the Year Awards 2025 was held during October at the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management Learning Convention and Exhibition.
The Cemetery of the Year Awards is a UK based award that recognises best practices and high standards in burial grounds and is judged on high standards of operation, including compliance with legislation and providing modern services.
Philip Potts of the Memorial Awareness Board said;
The awards are an excellent opportunity to reward hard-working staff and demonstrate the central role cemeteries and church yards can play in the community. They provide places of peaceful contemplation and beauty, as well as their historical, social and ecological importance.
The team at Northwich Town Council performed exceptionally throughout the extensive judging period which is focused on Industry Standards, Good Practice and Freedom of Choice.

About Witton Cemetery, Northwich
Established in 1891, Witton Cemetery is one of Cheshire’s most historic and beautifully maintained cemeteries. Located on Church Road in Northwich, it serves as a peaceful resting place for generations of local families. The cemetery covers approximately 20 acres and includes areas dedicated to traditional burials, cremated remains, and war graves maintained in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
