Northwich Town Council working in partnership with Cheshire West & Chester Councils Total Environment Team and the Mersey Forest have planted a community orchard with the help of local volunteers.
The planting took place on open space which is land locked by 3 railway lines just off Greenall Road in Northwich. Over 40 trees were planted which included plum, apple, pear and damson trees which will be managed and maintained by Northwich Town Council with the support of volunteers.
Northwich Town Mayor Cllr Graham Emmett who took part in the planting said, “What a great initiative this is and I have thoroughly enjoyed planting the trees alongside local volunteers and Council officers, I look forward to popping along and picking some fruit in the next few years when the trees have become fully established.”
Chris Moseley Total Environment Health Ranger echoed the Town Mayors comments “This orchard project will not only provide flowers for pollinators in the spring but also fruit in the late summer for the community to enjoy. This all helps to add more natural diversity to this area of greenspace. It was a great opportunity for the two authorities to come together with a positive outcome.”
